JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES
Born in 1938, José de Guimarães is considered one of the most prominent Portuguese artists of contemporary art. He has a wide and remarkable range of work in painting, sculpture and other creative art forms, making him one of the most award-winning Portuguese artists. José de Guimarães had a strong involvement with the European Capital of Culture 2012, in Guimarães, which saw the birth of the Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (CIAJG), an Arts Centre integrated into the Platform for Arts and Creativity.
The Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office (INCM) itself, marked the city’s status as European Capital of Culture by minting a commemorative 2 Euro coin designed by this artist.
In 1990 he was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of Prince Henry, by the then President of the Republic, Mario Soares.
